Barni
A Village on Display: An Open-Air Ethnographic Museum
There’s a different way to discover Barni, a little gem in triangolo lariano time seems to have found its ideal rhythm. It’s the “Un paese in posa” project, an experience that transforms the old town center into a veritable open-air ethnographic museum. As you stroll through the narrow streets, you won’t find white walls or glass display cases, but rather the facades of the houses themselves serving as exhibition spaces, and the village benches inviting you to pause and reflect, just as if they were the sofas in an art gallery.
The exhibition unfolds along a route featuring 40 large-scale photographs, each capturing a fragment of life from the past: traditional farming objects that, through the lens of photographer Giulia Caminada, are transformed from mere dusty tools into icons of a collective identity. It is a tribute to the sense of belonging of a community that has decided to put its history on full display, transforming public space into a place where art is accessible and free.
However, this is not a solitary journey. You will often be accompanied on this journey by the eyes and voices of those who live in the town: local guides ready to share anecdotes, explain the deeper meaning of those objects, and reveal how photographic creativity has become an urban art form in Barni.
This is an invitation to everyone, from the oldest to the youngest, to rediscover the joy of a leisurely stroll. Because walking is the most authentic and unhurried way to encounter beauty, lose yourself in the historic center, and let the sights guide you through a narrative that bridges the past and the present. The exhibition project was created in collaboration with the CulturABarni Cultural Association, with the aim of preserving the memory of the region and presenting it, intact and vibrant, to anyone who chooses to visit.
